Karen and her husband Tom founded Sean Humphrey House in memory of their son, Sean. She remained an active leader of the organization, and in the LGTBQ+ and HIV/AIDS community, until her death in 2009.
Sean’s humanitarian concerns for others affected by the virus “who don’t have what we have…family, medical insurance, friends and adequate finances” spurred his parents, friends, family and innumerable volunteers to build Sean Humphrey House which was dedicated to his memory in January of 1995.
